Hello, Depth of Field!

I got a camera! I just received it last night and I am so, so, so excited. I wish I could take an awesome picture of the camera, but (as my friend has noted) that would get recursive and result in an infinite loop. I got the camera body only, and purchased a 50mm f/1.8 lens separately. I do love that lens. It's super cheap (in the world of lenses), lots of people rave about it, and it'll be plenty to learn on I'm sure.

First Picture EVER!

I had to make cat food last night. It took all the will I had in my body to not open the box until I was all done. I had been waiting to make such a big purchase until I paid off my student loans. And this was the perfect reward. I upgraded my Flickr account to pro this morning to commemorate this occasion.

I know pretty much nothing about photography. I did take a physics class that was dedicated almost entirely to optics a couple of years ago, so hopefully I can apply what I already know and pick it up quickly. With a little bit of luck, I'll be able to use maybe 10% of this camera's functionality by next year (and finally capture cats in the pouncing action).

The first picture in this post was the very first shot with the camera. Tig was really startled by the autofocus noise and the flash. Poor cats don't know what's about to hit them. I do apologize in advance for the absurd number of cat photos that are about to surface on this blog. I'm sorry. I just love cats.

In any case, I'm really excited to share my photos with you. And if you know anything about photography, or have any tips, please, please, please share!

  1. Aw! Love these. That is so cool with your new camera. As you may know I'm quite the camera enthusiast myself. What is your flickr account?

Btw. Since your new to photography, but you know a lot about optics - these course notes might be just the right thing for you: http://graphics.stanford.edu/courses/cs178-11/

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

    1. Anna! Those course notes are awesome! Thank you so much. It's very in-depth.

I love your photos. How different is shooting with an analogue camera? My flickr account is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85201870@N00/ If you click on any picture on the blog it'll take you to flickr.

    2. Wow! You already have lots of great pictures :D Glad you liked the course notes.

There is no digital photography that can compare itself to analog photography. You can check out the differences here: http://blog.allisonlehman.com/2012/01/film-vs-dslr-vs-iphone/
