Oslo

IMG_6804

Oslo is beautiful. And my host in Oslo is even more so. I basically invited myself to Anna's place, and she has made me feel totally at home.

Tomorrow, I'm taking the train to Bergen to see the obligatory fjord. ~5.5 hours on a boat! Wish me luck.

Two Selves

Do you keep up with Humans of New York? I was clearing out my old bookmarks today and found this gem:
I wish I’d partied a little less. People always say ‘be true to yourself.’ But that’s misleading, because there are two selves. There’s your short term self, and there’s your long term self. And if you’re only true to your short term self, your long term self slowly decays.
It reminded me of another quote I came across recently. "You have two lives. Your first life ends when you realize you only have one life."

How to Recover after Bursting into Tears

I have this tendency to cry when I'm in the middle of arguing. (Ahem. See here.) It's really awful, but I feel like I can't help it sometimes. It just comes over me like a wave, and before I know it, I'm crying about crying.

As always, Amy Poehler gives spot-on advice:
If you do start crying in an argument and someone asks why, you can always say, "I'm just crying because of how wrong you are."
Amazing, right? Why hadn't I read it sooner?! :)

Milestones

Untitled

Yesterday was mama's first anniversary of living in the US!

Even though I remember quite well how I felt one year in, it's safe to say she and I have had a very different experience. It certainly wasn't an easy first year for me, but her struggles are tough in ways I probably will never fully understand. She is amazing. I am so proud of her.

Mama's 1st year in numbers:
- we shared a one-bedroom apartment (and a queen-sized bed) for 341 days
- 3 tries to pass her drivers' test
- almost no English --> first job (as a sales associate!): 6 months
- 4 backpacking trips + a 2 week vacation of having 0 worries about cats
- watched 4 seasons of Modern Family
- roughly 350 hours of back-scratching

Breathing Life into Clothes

photo via sidebraids

This weekend, I finally tackled the heap of hand-washing I've been putting off for weeks. Exciting, I know. As is often the case with chores, it's really quite enjoyable once you get started.

Sun poured through the windows, Santal 33 permeated the air in my apartment, Amy Poehler told me I'd be OK. Once I got to ironing and saw the first wave of wrinkles disappear, I remembered this conversation I had with a friend...
