Anxiety Hack

photo via oktoberkind
[S]o much angst is generated at worrying about ourselves. Lots of research suggests that doing something nice for someone else generates a positive sense of well-being. If you find yourself overcome by anxious thoughts or feeling sorry for yourself about something, find something to do for someone else.

Sounds of Technology

Already ripe avocados? Get out of here with that nonsense, Ralphs. I’m from New York, where, in lieu of avocados, grocery stores put out six hundred petrified dragon eggs and shoppers must squeeze every last one of them before buying the softest but still rock-hard option, and then bring it home and watch it go from unripe to completely rotten without ever once being edible. That’s how New Yorkers do avocados.

This made me laugh.

First Day of Fall

Happy first day of fall, friends!

I was just thinking back to what I was up to last year and the year before on this very day. Although there are few blog posts in this time period, I have taken lots of photos to look back on.

Two years ago today, I was in Zermatt.

Two years! Gah, it feels impossible that it's only been two years. Feels like a lifetime. Watching the video made me a little teary. So much has changed, and somehow so little. (I literally wore exactly the same clothes this week. Slouchy jeans + gray sweatshirt really stood the test of time. :)

Life is insane. Even the little bit I know of it.

Happy Birthday, Vova!

My brother turns 29(!!) today.

Alex is making Momofuku's Bo Ssam recipe all day today, and I'm so so excited to try it with Vova and Jackie tonight! For the first time in forever, Vova and I live in the same city. Being able to hang out, have brunch together at the spur of the moment is just the best.

Happy birthday, Vova! Thank you for being such a smart and wise best friend.

Have a Fun (Long) Weekend!

Phew. It's Friday.

Is it weird that I feel like a failure for not having big Labor Day weekend plans? Alex and I are going on a long run on Saturday. And on Sunday we are getting together with some friends at a park and playing some games (kanjam, spikeball! yayyy!), eating sausages, and hanging out with dogs. :) Basically trying to forget that summer is ending.

Sending you lots of love, wherever you are.

P.S. I made a playlist of songs I used to listen to in high school, and it's such a throwback. Alex and I have been sharing so many stories we wouldn't have otherwise remembered. Crazy how music can just take you back.

On Falling in Love

photo via thruhiker

Atlantic published this letter John Steinbeck wrote about falling in love, and it stuck with me for years. So much wisdom in such a short letter. I've never read a book that's just a collection of letters, but this book might be the perfect place to start.

And don't worry about losing. If it is right, it happens -- The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.

26 - A State of the Union Address

I turned 26 two week ago. My birthday fell on a Sunday this year. I took Friday off work.

Early morning on Friday Alex and I got coffee and donuts and headed off to Desolation Wilderness for the weekend. The view from our campsite to Lower Velma Lake was breathtaking. I literally cried happy tears when I saw it.

We came back on Sunday, sunburnt and dirty, and I had a drawing of Moos and Tig and a merengue torta waiting for me. All in all, it was a perfect day.

I'm going to skip tallying up last year, because I just don't know what to say.

26 years and 13 days later, it's still strange to me how life can be so sweet and so heartbreaking at the same time. I'm truly grateful for my fun life. Grateful for clean sheets, donuts, alpine lakes. Grateful that I still get to learn lots at my job, and grateful to be working for a mission I believe in.

And forever and always, I'm grateful for Moos and Tig and their stinky cat breath. :)

P.S. One thing I totally nailed this year was getting my finances under control. Watsi + Kitten Rescue donation was on time.

Candle Wisdom

Candle Wisdom by Piet Hein:
If you knew
what you will know
when your candle
has burnt low,
it would greatly
ease your plight
while your candle
still burns bright.
So true, isn't it? Don't know what's up with me and candles lately...

Women Helping Women

How sweet is this gif?

There are so many people who have helped me get to where I am now; women and men. And I feel like I've taken opportunities to help others. Sometimes I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm trying.

My coworkers know how to make me laugh. :)

P.S. More code review lolz.

Remind Workation Video

Here's the video of my brilliant // hilarious // kick-ass team on the workation I mentioned in the last post.

The video didn't turn out as cool as previous one. At least I got better at making titles, right?

Have a Chill Weekend!

I've been working from a (gorgeous) house in SF this week. The photo above is our view of the city! Unreal, right?!

Needless to say, I'm exhausted and so ready to go home tonight. Have a relaxing weekend!

Happy Women's Day

Give your favorite lady some flowers, or a hug and a kiss today. It's not always easy being a girl, but we are up for the challenge. :)

Alex and I had the dreamiest vacation in Belize. We spent most of it under water touching sharks and harassing eels, and I got nitrogen narcosis under 140 ft of ocean in the Great Blue Hole. Overall, a great success.

Despite being on a budget this trip, I spent all of my money on scuba. So, we're going to explore in cheaper ways for a while. Cheers for backpacking season!

Happy Friday

the first photo of alex and me. before we started dating.

Has a song ever caught you off guard and brought back a tidal wave of memories? That just happened to me this morning.

This song came on, and I was like whoa. I used to listen to that album non-stop when Alex and I just started dating. Listening to the song gave me all the good feels. The brain is such a crazy thing. How does it work?! :)

We're escaping to a warm beach in Belize for a few days! Been working crazy hard this week to wrap everything up before leaving tomorrow night, and everything is finally coming together. Have a great weekend!

Full Force

We both found ourselves in this spot where, when you want to make something like this, you have no other option but to go full-force or not at all.

The Nose by Gogol

photo via riptin

We are 1/10th of the way through 2016 already, and I've only read one (very short) Russian novel so far. Time to pick it up!
Only after a while did he with care take the thus recovered nose in cupped hands, and again examine it attentively.
“It, undoubtedly. It, precisely,” he said at length. “Yes, and it even has on it the pimple to the left which broke out on me yesterday.” Sheerly he laughed in his delight.
But nothing lasts long in this world. Even joy grows less lively the next moment. And a moment later, again, it weakens further. And at last it remerges insensibly with the normal mood, even as the ripple from a pebble’s impact becomes remerged with the smooth surface of the water at large.

Not Fair

"Livet är verkligen inte rättvist :(" | Life really is not fair.

That's all I wanted to hear today.

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

I was dogsitting this beauty of a girl for 2 weeks during the holidays.

She broke her toenail and we had to wait for the vet for 4 hours on January 1st.

Helen is deaf and knows sign language. Unfortunately, she is not fluent in cat body language. She was completely oblivious to the cats' hissing.

Water Damage

I broke my beloved Canon 6D on a backpacking trip on my birthday last year.

In the stupidest way, too! I dunked it in water while chasing a salamander. No big deal. Just dry it out, I thought! I took out the battery, and dutifully didn't turn it on for a week few days. It turned on, which was promising, but then the shutter started releasing on its own. Wahhh.

I sent it in to Canon for repair, and they came back with an estimate of $1,319.05. Noooooooo. I've been borrowing trusting people's cameras ever since. Until...

Jag är jätteduktig på svenska, hur så?

Hahahha. Just kidding. I don't know how I managed to get that score, but it's one of my proudest accomplishments.
