Clear Skin

photo via Garance Dore

For the past few years, right around my birthday, my skin decides to give me a lovely present of clear skin. And every year I think, Ah-ha! I've grown out of having teenage acne-prone skin. And throw myself a party in the form of throwing away all my acne treatment stuff.

And then, of course, a few weeks later, it's back with a vengeance.

But, you guys, it's almost September, and my skin hasn't broken out since, like, beginning of July! I'm pretty sure this makes me an authority on clear skin, so get ready to receive my expert advice.

The secret to clear skin is...

Trans-Siberian {part 2}

This is the second part of my adventure across Russia. My friend Forrest, and I boarded a train in Penza on August 7th. (One of us did so while sobbing hysterically.) We finally arrived at our destination August 12th.

Let me tell you, I love trains. But being on one for that long seriously flexed my patience muscle.

Would I do it again? Yes.

Paralyzing Fear

photo by irene suchocki
Try to imagine a life without timekeeping. You probably can’t. You know the month, the year, the day of the week. There is a clock on your wall or the dashboard of your car. You have a schedule, a calendar, a time for dinner or a movie. Yet all around you, timekeeping is ignored. Birds are not late. A dog does not check its watch. Deer do not fret over passing birthdays. Man alone measures time. Man alone chimes the hour. And, because of this, man alone suffers a paralyzing fear that no other creature endures. A fear of time running out.

Trans-Siberian {what to bring}

I just got back from the epic adventure that is the Trans-Siberian. I have to say, it's rough. If you are easily disturbed by weird smells, snoring people, frequently walking by dirty feet at your face level, etc (i'm just getting started) -- this is not going to be a pleasant trip. But if you can tough it, it's a pretty amazing adventure.

Here's what I would bring to ease the pain of shower-less train for 6 days and maximize the awesome...

Trans-Siberian {part 1}

I shot some video while I was on the Trans-Siberian trip. I really wasn't sure if it was going to turn out, but somehow it did! So, here's just a short moment of the first part of my trip -- my hometown and my family.

Sunday Habit

Aaaaand I'm back to my old Sunday lazy breakfast habit. Oh, beautiful, tiny kitchen. I've missed you so!

my trusty swedish pancake recipe

4 eggs
1 cup flour
1 3/4 cups whole milk
4 tbsp melted butter
dash of salt
splash of vanilla (i actually scraped a vanilla bean, 'cause i'm fancy)

mix up the batter. get a buttered 10'' skillet nice and hot over low-medium heat. pour 1/3 cup of batter into the skillet while tilting it until it's crepe-like. flip it with your hands if you dare, or with a spatula, if you'd like to retain feeling in the tips of your fingers.

I couldn't be happier to be home nursing my jetlag with cozy socks and breakfast at 5 am.

Counting Days

next to Lake Baikal

I'm still adventuring half-way around the world. (Leaving Lake Baikal for Beijing today.) 3 days until I'm finally home!
